DNA & Genetics

Have you ever heard someone say

"don't buy a dog that is not DNA tested or hasn't got 100% clear parents".

So firstly what is DNA and why do we test, we can see it's a dog!

DNA tests allows us to have a better understand of our dog’s genetics. Genetics is the scientific study of genes and heredity—of how certain qualities or traits are passed from parents to offspring as a result of changes in DNA sequence.

These types of tests can tell us if our dog is affected by specific conditions or whether they may pass on the genes associated with these conditions if we bred from them.
They can also assist us to match our breeding dogs to a specific stud/bitch to try and achieve a specific outcome, such as in colours and coat types.  As an example using DNA results we can insure our puppies have furnishing, this is what gives the Theodore that teddy bear look.

So DNA testing is our building blocks to ethically breed better quality puppies.

So we know Theodore / Cavoodles are a crossbreed, originating from a purebred  King Charles Cavaliers and a purebred Toy or Miniature Poodle.

Both these breeds are prone to a number of genetic disease.

Which brings me to that quote

"don't buy a dog that is not DNA tested or hasn't got 100% clear parents".

The ethical breeder you choose should be happy to supply you with a watermarked  copy of both breeding parents DNA results, correct.

Do both parents need to be 100% clear of all results, NO.

To best understand why I say this please watch this short video by Embark

Education is the key to understanding

So providing we assess the DNA results and insure the breeding pair have the results that best suit our needs to insure the offspring are not at risk the answer is yes, as ethical breeders we can breed from a dog that is not 100% clear.
