Why We Use ENS and ESI in Our Puppy Program

Building Confident Puppies: Why We Use ENS and ESI

At Belbon Theodore/Cavoodles, we’re committed to raising puppies that are not only healthy but also confident, resilient, and ready for life with their forever families. One of the key ways we support this is through ENS (Early Neurological Stimulation) and ESI (Early Scent Introduction), which are both backed by science and trusted by responsible breeders worldwide.

What is ENS?

Early Neurological Stimulation is a series of small, gentle exercises introduced to puppies between days 3 and 16 of life. These include:

  • Holding the puppy upright

  • Head down position

  • Supine (on back) position

  • Gentle toe stimulation

  • Tactile stimulation with a cold surface

These brief and safe activities gently stimulate the nervous system and help improve stress tolerance, cardiovascular health, immune function, and even performance later in life.

What is ESI?

Early Scent Introduction is the process of introducing puppies to a variety of new smells — one per day — during the same early developmental window (days 3–16). This helps enhance scenting ability and develop stronger connections in the brain, which is particularly beneficial for dogs being raised for therapy, assistance, or even companion roles.

Why We Use ENS and ESI

These methods help lay the foundation for well-adjusted puppies by:

Building confidence and resilienceEnhancing stress recovery and adaptabilityEncouraging curiosity and engagementSupporting future success in training and social situations

Our goal is to give every puppy the best start possible — not just physically, but emotionally and mentally, too. ENS and ESI are part of the reason why our puppies go on to thrive in their new homes.
